Tidal Things

Getij-Dingen 2009 (Tidal Things 2009) is an experimental project developed by and together with the cultural department of Koksijde and the Coast Department of the Flemish Government.

Work 1
The recepy grew out of me with and by 4 ingredients : the idea, the location, the "now or never" feeling, and the slogan "don't chat, lay an egg!".

In the eternal back and forth of ebb and flow I saw a creative invitation for local artists : ˜Can we achieve a kind of art with the tide ?"

The results of this question : for almost four seasons, art lovers can enjoy an extremely original form of conceptual art along the beach of Koksijde : artistic creations combined with the influence of the tide on the beach. Three-dimensional works of art, placed on poles in the low water line undergo an artistic change for months because of the water that comes and goes. Do ebb and flow, the waves, the water help create art ? Do men and nature achieve a sublime aesthetic perception ? What kind of traces are left on the works after each tide, again and again, during one year (four seasons). What will the results of such an experiment be ?

Work 2The location is determined between pole 1 on the border between Nieuwpoort-Bad and Oostduinkerke by the Noordwindhelling and pole 15 by the Grardplein in Sint-Idesbald. From mid-January spectators can find the way to the poles at low tide in order to experience how the natural sea changes, refreshes, renews or destroys art made by people. In the latter case the poles are given a work of art by a new artist.

This Land-Art project shows us the way how things in life change and end, how everything comes to an end, how we all end at the same station, undoubtedly. During the whole year you can come and walk along the shore, and enjoy this slow motion film....this is not the internet, this is cristalclear reality.

If maybe artists on other places on our globe could put up similar projects, I hope to join them in working together and achieving the same humble artistic result as being a Convenient Truth.
